What is Reiki?

Reiki is relaxation and healing technique that originated in Japan. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei = meaning higher power or supernatural force, and ki = meaning life energy. Loosely translated, Reiki means universal life-force energy. Reiki is pronounced Ray + Key. Reiki is administered with a light touch or no touch, according to the client’s preference. The client reclines on a massage table fully clothed. Reiki treats the whole person, mind, body and spirit. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing and relaxation that everyone can use.

Here is a great video from ABC news explaining Reiki.

How does it work?

Reiki is based on the assumption that unseen energy, or “ki”, flows through all living things along pathways in the body called meridians. When the flow of ki is blocked or disrupted, health and emotional problems can occur. A Reiki practitioner channels energy by gently putting his/her hands on or near the body in several specific positions. These positions mirror the pathways that carry energy through the body. The flow of Reiki from practitioner to client is thought to heal by correcting energy imbalances and restoring overall well being.

The Benefits of Reiki Treatments

The effects of Reiki vary from one person to another. Some will feel tingling or warmth, others will feel nothing at all. In general, Reiki energy will flow to the place where the body needs it most. This is not always the place where the most obvious symptoms are displayed. Reiki is a complimentary modality and works well in conjunction with medical treatments. But please note, Reiki does not replace traditional medical treatments.

Volunteers in hospitals around the country offer Reiki to reduce anxiety and pain or to speed healing after surgeries. In fact, Dr. Oz has featured Reiki as a beneficial treatment on his show, which aired on 01/06/2010, http://reikidigest.blogspot.com/2010/01/breaking-news-reiki-on-dr-oz-show.html

What is a session like?

A typical Reiki session lasts about an hour. The practitioner begins by placing his/her hands in basic positions that cover your head, shoulders, stomach, and back. The practitioner holds each position from two to five minutes and then may target the specific areas of the body where you are experiencing discomfort. After a Reiki session, most people are very relaxed. They usually describe experiencing feelings of peace and well-being. At the very least, expect to feel extremely relaxed; you may even fall asleep.

Is it safe?

Yes, Reiki is a noninvasive technique, and practitioners use a light touch or no touch in all hand positions.
